Years ago, I lived and served in an orphanage in Mexico. While there were other American volunteers living there, most were fluent in Spanish. I was not. I had taken 4 years of Spanish in high school and a year in college. Unfortunately, I had not practiced or retained what I had learned for when I would need it most.

Being submerged in a different culture and language can become discouraging at times. That discouragement or frustration can burn you out, or it can teach you go to the LORD for encouragement. I am so grateful for the pastors I have had in my life. Pastor Jesse Mason, of Christian Chapel in Walnut California, taught in a sermon on how to encourage yourself in the LORD.

In Psalms 43:5 it reads “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Starting with a conversation with yourself, you ask your soul, “What’s wrong?” and then you direct yourself back to fixing your eyes on Jesus.

Encouraging yourself in the LORD is very important and also very difficult if you have not established a daily time of prayer and reading of God’s word. Meditating on God’s truth is the best remedy for discouragement. I had learned also from my pastor at that time that worshipping through singing and audibly praising God was a great weapon against discouragement, loneliness or frustration.

Another way to stay encouraged is to be connected to a body of believers that can help lift your discouragement or loneliness by reminding you who you are in Christ. But there will always be times in our faith adventure that a friend is not available. Christ will always be available.

Ways to Encourage Yourself in the LORD

1. Meditate on scripture that says who God is. Do this before you find yourself discouraged or lonely. Being prepared is essential for recalling verses that will remind you of God’s faithfulness.

2. Pray aloud. Pray scriptures that speak of the character of God. Refrain from silent prayers in your thoughts.

3. Sing aloud. Sing scriptures about God’s character. Sing songs to God.
